It’s far from high-definition, but it appears to be the first time you can watch a historic Cubs game from 1965 in color.
Cubs blog Bleed Cubbie Blue pointed out the WGN broadcast Friday. It includes “Mad Men”-era commercials for Hamm’s Beer and Allstate Insurance. The video was uploaded to YouTube this week.
It’s a bittersweet glimpse into the past for Cubs fans. On one hand, legendary announcer Jack Brickhouse can be heard calling the final innings of the game. Unfortunately, it’s also footage of a no-hitter thrown by Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jim Maloney against the boys in blue.
Bleed Cubbie Blue notes it’s extremely rare to see colorized tape of baseball from that era, or any television for that matter.
