The New York Times is reporting: Target is building its smallest store ever, testing the waters for a possible expansion into urban areas.

The retailer completed a lease last week on a 20,000-square-foot location in Minneapolis. That’s far smaller than a traditional suburban Target store that can be five times that size. The new store format will be called TargetExpress.

Walmart has already followed this model and opened several city locations. It has two Walmart Express stores in Chicago.
