ISTANBUL (Reuters) – At least 20 miners were killed and more than 200 were believed to be trapped after a coal mine collapsed in the western Turkish province of Manisa on Tuesday, Turkish media reported.
The mayor of Soma, a district in Manisa, told CNN Turk television that at least 200-300 workers were working in the mine when there was an explosion caused by an electrical fault.
Local parliament member Muzaffer Yurttas, citing health officials, told broadcaster NTV that 20 bodies had been retrieved from the mine in the province of Manisa and that at least another 20 workers had been taken to hospital.
