Former state Rep. Derrick Smith was convicted in June 2014 of one count each of bribery and extortion for accepting a $7,000 kickback in a plot to extort a day care operator in his district who needed a letter of support for a state grant. Smith was sentenced to five months in prison April 23, 2015.
