A gas leak shut down a part of Northwest Highway in Palatine for about four hours Tuesday morning.

A contractor digging in the area of Plum Grove Road and Northwest Highway struck a two inch gas line, causing a significant leak, Palatine officials said in a press release.

Traffic was shut down on Northwest Highway in both directions, from Smith to Benton streets, and on Plum Grove Road, north of Comfort Street.

The area was not evacuated, although nine firefighters and a hose line were at the ready in of case an ignition. The Palatine fire department said the brisk wind helped dissipate the fumes.

NICOR crews worked to fix the line and the scene was cleared shortly before noon.

No one was hurt.
