Change can be disruptive, but doesn’t have to be, said Nguyen. Disruptive change can work when a leader with a direct lock on what customers want can dictate direction, personnel and processes.

But in an established organization, Nguyen said directive change leads to trauma and backlash. When employees — or customer perception of a respected brand — are among the stakeholders, an inclusive, developmental approach is recommended.
Make no mistake, however. Change is always uncomfortable.
“There’s a line from leadership coaching,” Nguyen said: “‘The change we seek, but don’t yet have, lies just outside our comfort zone.'”
