CHICAGO TRIBUNE ANNOUNCES ILLINOIS HIGH SCHOOL ALL-STATE ACADEMIC TEAM
CHICAGO, May 5, 2001 – Ten of the brightest and most well-rounded high school seniors from around the state were chosen from 501 nominees to make up the 16th annual Chicago Tribune Illinois High School All-State Academic Team. Each will receive a $2000 scholarship from the Chicago Tribune Foundation.
Lisa Hutmacher, 17, a senior at Bloomington (Ill.) High School, is Student of the Year on the team. Tribune reporters Stephanie Banchero and Noreen Ahmed-Ullah will unveil and profile the entire academic team in the Sunday, May 6, Chicago Tribune.
This impressive group boasts all straight-A students, five with perfect ACT or SAT college entrance exam scores, and numerous extracurricular activities. They devote their spare time to working with disabled children in India, rebuilding communities in Costa Rica and serving as a Girl Scout leader.
“I look at these kids and marvel,” said Tom Steele, a teacher at J.D. Darnall High School in Geneseo, who served as a judge. “If the rest of the kids in Illinois are even half as impressive as these kids, we have a bright future to look forward to.”
