It’s Quotable. It’s Quirky. It’s a Quick read. CHICAGO TRIBUNE INTRODUCES Q
CHICAGO, September 6, 2002 – Q is the Chicago Tribune’s answer to “What’s worth talking about this week?” The section debuts Sunday, Sept. 15 as the latest addition to the weekly features lineup. It promises to pull together a little bit of information on a lot of different topics, with shorter items covering people, fashion, entertainment, health and fitness, ethics, ideas and more.
“Q is eclectic, playful and younger in attitude,” said Jim Warren, deputy managing editor/features.
Highlights include:
- Weekly ethical dilemmas. Should you lie at work? Spy on your kids? Q will get you thinking.
- “Traditions” showcases everyday events as experienced by everyday people– learning how to ride a bike or the first day of kindergarten.
- “Life on a block” offers a slice of neighborhood life in different areas of Chicago.
- “Q diary” presents oddball snippets such as strange police reports and unusual conversations overheard in the supermarket.
“We think we’ve adroitly assembled a mix of ideas in a novel, engaging way,” said Warren. Q replaces the Sunday Health & Family section in the Tribune’s features offerings and represents a departure from the trend toward niche subject-oriented newspaper sections.
“Everything in our society suggests the need to head down the path of more one-stop shopping,” said Warren. While readers will get their first look at Q on Sept. 15, the section already has piqued the interest of advertisers.
“Our advertisers have told us this is exactly the type of section they’ve been looking for,” said Ken DePaola, vice president/advertiser marketing and sales. “They’re viewing Q as an excellent platform to reach younger consumers with their branding campaigns.”
