CHICAGO TRIBUNE PICKS TOP 50 MAGAZINES

The Economist leads the newspaper’s 4th annual list of top
magazines

CHICAGO, June 14, 2006–When Chicago
Tribune unveils its annual list of 50 best magazines it will show
an eclectic mix of the obscure (Wisconsin Trails) to the
mainstream (Time). But this year it’s a British magazine that won
the hearts of the Chicago Tribune staff, which gives the magazine
its top honor. The newspaper’s list will be published in its
Tempo section tomorrow.

Ranking atop Chicago Tribune’s 2006 list is the Economist, the
weekly current affairs and business magazine which the paper
describes as “the best English-language newsweekly” whose
strength lies in its international coverage “where it does not
feel moved to cover a faraway land only at a time of unmitigated
disaster.” The magazine, published in Great Britain, ranked 3rd
in last year’s list.

Rounding out Chicago Tribune’s top five for the year are Dwell
(home design), Wired (digital technology), The New Yorker
(current events) and ESPN the magazine (sports). Past top-ranked
magazines Cook’s
Illustrated (2003), Wired (2004) and Blender (2005)
have also found their
places high on this year’s list.

“In ranking the magazines every year, we consider whether they’re
interesting, whether they have great journalism, but most
importantly, whether they are successful in fulfilling its
mission and accomplish what they set out to do,” said Tim Bannon,
editor of Chicago Tribune’s Tempo section. “Our rankings are
completely subjective, but there’s a lot of thoughtfulness that
go into formulating the list.”
