Toledo, Ohio

1. The Toledo Museum of Art
This world-class institution provides a satisfying sampler of the planet’s best in all the fine arts and a dazzling display of glass artifacts–an excellent excuse for a weekend getaway all by itself.
2. U.S. Highway 12
A good detour either coming or going, the route trundles through a series of charming lower-Michigan main streets with restored and spiffy storefronts and an abundance of antique shops.
3. The Toledo Zoo
Besides all the creatures large and small, families from all over Lucas County flock to this sprawling complex for the theaters, theme areas, choo-choo train and enough concession stands to make the tummy ache.
4. The Toledo Mud Hens
In a stadium that opened in 2002, minor league fans enjoy all the bells, whistles, fireworks and sky boxes that befit a venerable home team. All spring and summer, amidst the hoopla, baseball games break out.
5. The Warehouse District
A few yards from the ballpark, boutiques, bars and restaurants are developing, as some urban pioneers strive for a livable and stroller-friendly downtown.
6. The Docks
Across the Maumee River, a string of restaurants–both solo and the offspring of the better chains–allow a fine view of the Toledo skyline: warm weather alfresco dining that’s hard to beat.
7. S.S. Willis B. Boyer Museum Ship
A short stroll from the Docks, the old freighter allows visitors a peek at the interior of a Great Lakes behemoth built in 1911 and, though retired now, still looking ready to haul ore.
