This week’s Theater Loop Showcase is “Smokefall,” Noah Haidle’s acclaimed drama currently being remounted at the Goodman Theatre. The play depicts multiple generations of a family that goes through life as any family does: with loss, hardship and unrelenting hope. In this scene, Chicago legend Mike Nussbaum plays the colonel, a grandfather afflicted with dementia who’s recently lost his wife; Katherine Keberlein is his pregnant daughter, Violet, and Catherine Combs is his ageless granddaughter, Beauty. Guy Massey plays Footnote — not so much a narrator as a commentator. It’s morning in this house, and what was once a daily routine has taken on a fog of sorrow.

“Smokefall” plays the Goodman Theatre through Oct. 26.
