University of Michigan freshman volleyball player Katherine Mahlke, a former Downers Grove North standout, had 12 kills in a five-set loss to No. 15 Purdue on Friday. Although Michigan is struggling with a 5-7 mark, the Wolverines’ future appears bright with several freshmen, including Mahlke, picking up valuable playing time so far this year.

The 6-foot-2 hitter opened her college career with 12 kills and 13 digs against Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 29.
