Kora’s story is still being written. The beginning is rather horrific, but things, for now, are stable.
Kora is a 2- or 3-year-old pit bull who was abandoned in a Chicago apartment without food or water. For how long is anybody’s guess.
“She had been laying on her side at least a month,” says Stephanie Paluch, co-founder of Players for Pits, the rescue that is now caring for Kora. “She had sores; one bedsore was down to the bone.”
Starved, abused and left behind when her owner left, she was about as close to death as a dog can get. (This video says it all, but beware, some may find it upsetting: http://vimeo.com/106255360).
The humane investigator who found her on Sept. 16 thought she was dead.
“What I heard, she was covered in debris,” Paluch says. “The investigator didn’t even see her.”
But Kora moved a paw, and the investigator hustled her to Chicago Animal Care & Control, which put her on IVs and transported her to Glen Ellyn Animal Hospital. Then Players for Pits took her in.
Her recovery has been slow. She took her first steps Sunday — and fell down — but took about 10 steps Tuesday. She has gained nine pounds, is eating and drinking sufficiently and is showing other improvement.
“At first she was very scared,” Paluch says. “Now she’s super sweet. She trusts people a lot.”
She hopes Kora will eventually be adopted, but there are still hurdles.
“She’ll need training and socialization. We want to make sure she’s good with kids, make sure she’s good at taking treats.”
