Area temperatures jump into the 60s Friday and sun returns as mild air rides in on gusty west winds, but another surge of chilly Canadian air arrives Saturday.
Chicago historian Frank Wachowski reports the city logged a puny 44 minutes of sun out of a possible 2,676 minutes in the four-day period ending Thursday. That’s only 2 percent of the possible amount, versus the long-term October average of 57 percent.
Hurricane Gonzalo, while not a threat to the U.S. mainland, is forecast to strike Bermuda (640 miles off the East Coast) on Friday as a violent Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 140 mph. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ana is churning northwestward on a path toward the Hawaiian islands over the weekend. Should that happen, it would be the first time since 1950 that two tropical cyclones have hit some portion of Hawaii in the same year.
