A recent letter to the editor claims that the Democrats are starting a class war over wealth. The truth is that class wars are usually, perhaps always, started by the very rich. The wars are only recognized when the middle- and lower-income people actually defend themselves.
There’s no good reason why anyone deserves to be a billionaire. Sure, some people work harder than others; some people are more talented; some jobs are more hazardous. These are all good reasons for higher compensation. But nobody deserves the absurdly high levels of wealth that a few people have.
The ultra rich rise to the 0.01 percent stratum of the economy by a combination of good luck and the ability to game the system. Talented, hardworking people can become ordinary millionaires, but only the lucky and the sneaky can rise higher than that.
