Illinois described its 28-24 victory Saturday against Minnesota as a potential season-changing game. If the Illini can keep earning these grades, they have reasons to be optimistic.
Offense: B+
Reilly O’Toole’s running and passing totaled 177 yards and accounted for two touchdowns. He didn’t score in the second half, but he steered the offense effectively. The one series from Aaron Bailey at QB was a disaster, and the coaches will need to think about how (and when) to best use him.
Defense: A-
This was the unit’s best performance of the season. The defense forced three turnovers, including a fumble recovery by V’Angelo Bentley for a touchdown that saved the day. The Illini also pressured Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner, who was sacked four times.
Special teams: A-
No mishaps means a good day for the Illini. No field goals were attempted, but punter Justin DuVernois was his typical reliable self by averaging 48.7 yards on nine punts. He pinned four inside the 20-yard line.
Coaching: B+
Credit the Illini coaches for effectively utilizing an open week. Going off script to stick with O’Toole after a poor series by Bailey was also the right decision. But should they have even tried him with the way O’Toole was playing?
