Maybe it’s time for the McCaskey family to follow the example of another famous Chicago sports family: the Wrigleys. In the 1970s, fans of the Chicago Cubs regarded their team as an embarrassment, even if they kept backing the organization out of loyalty. Indeed, most Cubs fans saw the team as an “heirloom,” a popular term in Chicago at the time for a professional sports team owned by a seemingly disconnected wealthy family. The Wrigleys appeared to admit as much when they sold the club in 1981 to the Tribune Co.
After the Green Bay Packers annihilated the Chicago Bears in front of a prime-time audience this week, I couldn’t help but wonder if the time is right for the McCaskeys to turn over the reins of the team to owners with a more aggressive style. The lack of passion from head coach Marc Trestman, the other coaches and the Bears themselves reflects poorly on the McCaskey family.
