Daktronics recreating Bears’ win over Vikings to find clock problem

Every play from the Chicago Bears’ 21-13 victory Sunday over the Minnesota Vikings was getting analyzed Monday — and not just by coaches, players and fans reveling in a win after an embarrassing three-game losing streak in which the Bears were regularly humiliated.

A day after a malfunction of Soldier Field’s game clocks, which vexed officials and players and drew a post-game potty mouth from Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, scoreboard supplier Daktronics was still trying to figure out what went wrong.

The company was recreating the game Monday — play by play — going back through all the starts and stops to find out what caused the game clocks to begin malfunctioning late in the second quarter, a problem which wasn’t corrected until near the end of the third quarter. With less than three minutes left in the game, the clocks went out again.

“Clocks here are (expletive),” Zimmer said after the game.

By mid-afternoon Monday, there still was no diagnosis.

“We are committed to helping our customers understand issues and troubleshoot the best we can,” Daktronics said in an emailed statement to the Tribune. “We are offering both in-person and phone support, and are in contact with the Bears as we try to recreate the situation in search of any of the issues we saw yesterday.”
