Big D: NIU defenders set the tone in the first half with a pair of interceptions. Dechane Durante and Paris Logan picked off James Knapke passes to help the Huskies to an early 10-0 lead. Durante added another pick in the second half to set a MAC title game record.
Good Hare day: Sophomore quarterback Drew Hare continues his improvement after taking over the starting role early in the season. His decision-making and running ability (60 yards) make him a valuable weapon.
Big hurt: The Huskies lost wide receiver/kick returner Chad Beebe to a broken left arm when he was tackled near the sideline in the first half. The son of former NFL standout Don Beebe has been a valuable performer this season.
Passing fancy: Huskies wide receivers Juwan Brescacin and Da’Ron Brown, as well as tight end Luke Eakes, helped Hare wind up with career numbers for completions (29) and attempts (49) good for 218 yards and two touchdowns. His fourth-quarter interception was just his second of the season and the first in 179 pass attempts.
The big stage: When coach Rod Carey decided to change place-kickers in the middle of the season, he had no idea how freshman Christian Hagan might handle clutch situations in big games. Hagan came through with three field goals Friday night.
Up next: Huskies likely enhanced their postseason bowl status with impressive victory.
