It’s been more than two decades for the Winter Wonderland light show at Cuneo Mansion and Gardens. In partnership with the Village of Vernon Hills, the Cuneo property has made it possible for thousands of families to build holiday memories in Lake County.
With a home development planned for the property, however, officials say this will likely be the last year for the light show. But it’s not too late to get in your car and enjoy the nearly 100 acres of holiday lights and decorations. Motorists can enhance their experience by tuning in to the local radio station (directions given upon entering the show) for a tandem visual and musical experience.
Expect to see Walt Disney characters and biblical displays, as well as a menorah. Kids will spy Nemo, Peter Pan, Snow White, an aerial monkey, Toy Story friends and Baby Jesus and his nativity in front of the pink mansion itself. The stately residence is decked out in lights with Victorian friends peeking out to drivers from their perch on the balcony. Santa’s North Pole elves are also busy in their magical workshop with a sampling of the toys they’re working on.
The show runs through Jan. 3 and is open daily from 6 to 10 p.m. except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Monday through the Thursday, the cost is $5 per car. On weekends, the fee is $10 for cars, $25 for buses (not tour sized). Cash only. Lines typically queue so expect to set aside quality time with passengers in order to fully appreciate this experience.
Many families bring their own snacks to enjoy in their cars as they view the lights from the warmth of their vehicles. It’s typical for parents to bring along containers of warm beverages along with Santa’s cookies.
The entrance is located on Lakeview Parkway north of Route 60, one half mile west of Route 21 (Milwaukee Avenue). Lakeview Parkway should be accessed from Route 60 (Town Line Road), to allow for a right turn into the light show. Left turns into the light show are not allowed because of traffic considerations.
Due to the route configuration, Cuneo is unable to accommodate tour buses, limousines and stretch SUVs longer than 25 feet. Don’t expect to make U-turns either once inside due to the traffic pattern and narrow lanes of the driving path.
Visit the village website or the Cuneo mansion site for more information.
