A Chicago cruise company has proposed using amphibious duck boats to give Chicago River tours. The massive World War II-era vehicles have enjoyed a renaissance of sorts, with the vehicles being restored and retrofitted to give tourists rides around the world.

The name

Duck is shorthand for DUKW

  • D: Stands for the model year, 1942
  • U: Stands for the body style, “utility”
  • K: Refers to vehicles that are all-wheel drive
  • W: Refers to the two rear axles

Manufactured

Based on the GMC cargo truck at the time, more than 20,000 were built during World War II.

Specifications

  • Length: 31 feet
  • Width: 8 feet, 2 inches
  • Height: 8 feet, 10 inches
  • Weight: 14,880 pounds
  • Payload: 5,175 pounds
  • Engine: Six-cylinder, 6-speed
  • Maximum land speed: 50 mph
  • Maximum water speed: 6.4 mph
  • Body: Boat-shaped, welded steel
  • Wheels: Six total, springs and axles attach to hull and suspend in water when floating
  • Propeller and rudder: Mounted in central tunnel at rear

In combat

First used in the invasion of Sicily in 1943. They played an integral role in the early stages of the D-Day invasion, transporting ammunition and cargo from ships to the beaches.

As a tourist vehicle

Some of the locations for duck tours include San Francisco, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Boston, San Diego, Miami, Washington, Philadelphia, Branson, Mo., Cincinnati, Stone Mountain, Ga., and the Wisconsin Dells.
