Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

It seems impossible to imagine the reality that we will one day somewhat soon have no need to bundle up in layers and coats and boots and hats and gloves. It will be summer again, I promise! And what better way to keep yourself busy until that happens than to volunteer for the Gathering on the Green committee? The Western Springs Business Association will be meeting once per month to plan and improve the best summer kick-off party around.

If you’d like to join in, email the WSBA at whizba@westernspringsbusiness.com. Word on the street is that there will be an adult-beverage tent at the 2015 Gathering on the Green. Call me crazy, but I think there is probably going to be a lot more scholarship money to give next year!

Parent University, without which many of us might be floundering about, wondering just what to do with these small people who somehow managed to become our responsibility, is coming up on Saturday, Jan. 31 at Lyons Township High School South Campus! There will be a keynote address called “Three Keys to Raising Resilient Children” by Mary O’Donohue, as well as small sessions on a wide variety of topics. Find more information and register at the Parent Community Network website http://parentcommunitynetwork.com.

There have been several planning commission meetings over the last couple of months regarding the former Tischler’s property that has been standing vacant for about 500 years. It seems that we are close to seeing that building come down and a new one, of the mixed-use, retail and residential variety, growing in its place.

From what I’ve seen of the plans and drawings, it won’t be a hulking eyesore, but of course that remains to be seen. Those of you interested in how that project might impact our downtown area, in addition to the residential areas directly adjacent to the property, can visit the village website at www.wsprings.com for more information on Foxford Station. 52 apartments!

My heart broke twice for Indian Head Park residents, family friends and outstanding young men Phil and Matt Janowiak as they lost both of their parents in the last two years. Even more so now after I’ve experienced my own similar loss just recently.

One for the Kids will host its Curve Ball at the Hyatt Lodge at McDonald’s Campus on Feb. 28, with the proceeds in part going to help support Phil and Matt and pay for their college educations. Tickets, more information about the event, and about Phil and Matt, can be found at the organization’s website at http://oneforthekids.org. If you are unable to attend, but wish to donate, feel free to get in touch with me and I’ll send you in the right direction (or you can donate via the website).

By the way, Happy New Year! I missed sending you all this wish at the beginning of the year. Better late than never. I hope your 2015 has begun with a bang and that you’re still plodding towards achieving all of your New Year’s resolutions. I didn’t bother to resolve to do anything this year other than to greet each new day with at least a semblance of enthusiasm. It sure makes it easier. I highly recommend it.
