CROWN POINT – Fifteen candidates took the last-chance opportunity Monday to withdraw from the May 5 primary without penalties.

Two candidates pulled out of the city council race in Gary. Democrats Darren Washington and Benjamin Robinson withdrew from the at-large and 4th District races, respectively.

East Chicago saw three candidates pull their names off the ballot: Inez Williams for city clerk, Reginald Tisdale for 2nd District and Gilbert Serrano for 1st District.

In Crown Point, Democrat Dan Rohaley pulled his name out of the race for city council at-large race and in Hammond, Al Salinas III, also a Democrat, withdrew from the 2nd District race. Democrat Mark Kopil withdrew from Hobart’s at-large city council race.

Those withdrawing from town races include:

Cedar Lake – Lester Charlie Kaper, 2nd Ward, Republican

Dyer – Michael Richard Soljan, clerk-treasurer, Republican

Merrillville – Sandra Lankford and Traci Stratten, clerk-treasurer, Democrats

New Chicago – Frank Monroe, Ward 1; Kenneth Ray Ewell, Ward 4, Democrats

Highland – Rachel Delaney, 4th Ward, Democrat
