The following items were discussed and/or action was taken at the village of Lincolnwood board of Trustees meeting on April 21.

Bridge/bike path proposal to be discussed during public hearing

A public discussion about the village’s proposal to build a bike path and a bridge crossing over Touhy Avenue will be held on Tuesday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Village Hall.

The village is planning to build a bike path along the Com Ed Row that would span from Devon Avenue to the intersection of Lincoln and Jarvis avenues. The other part of the proposed project shows an overpass bridge that would take pedestrians and bicyclists over Touhy Avenue.

The mile-long bike path would connect at the Sauganash Trail at Devon Avenue and end in Skokie on Lincoln and Jarvis avenues.

A regional bikeway system in the works would eventually lead from Chicago all the way up to the Wisconsin border—starting at Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago before connecting in Lincolnwood and winding up through Skokie, Glenview, Glencoe, and Northbrook.

The latest cost projections for the project will be discussed during the meeting, but village officials last year said the bridge could cost about $3.8 million.

Village clarifies park hours

A discrepancy in the village code that extended the designated picnic hours at Centennial Park an hour past the park’s closing time was cleared up by the Village Board.

All parks in Lincolnwood (except Proesel Park) close at 9 p.m., but the village code previously allowed picnics to be held in the park until 10 p.m. at Centennial Park.

The code was amended on April 21 to bring Centennial Park’s hours in line with the other parks.

The park hour ordinance also restricts parking in the lots at Centennial Park and at the Proesel Park Family Aquatic Center while the parks are closed.

Police replace squad car hit by drunk driver

A police cruiser that was hit by a drunk driver last month while the officer conducted a traffic stop was totaled and will be replaced with a new vehicle.

The police car was struck from behind while it was parked on the side of the road near the entrance to Lincolnwood Town Center on March 1 at 12:50 a.m.

The officer, who was not in the vehicle during the crash, was not hurt, but the car—a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria with 75,000 miles—was damaged beyond repair.

A new 2016 Ford Utility Police Interceptor AWD vehicle will be purchased for $27,154 from Currie Motors of Frankfort, Ill. to replace the car, according to information from the village.

Bus provider rehired for summer day camps

Skokie-based Alltown Bus Service, Inc. was contracted for the sixth year in a row to provide summer bus transportation for the Lincolnwood Park and Recreation Department’s swim team and the summer day camp program.

The village budgeted $23,000 for bus services for the summer day camp this year, and $1,000 for transportation to swim meets. All the costs are later recovered through fees charged to bus riders, according to information from the village.

“Funbrellas” to appear at the pool this summer

The umbrellas at the Proesel Park Family Aquatic Center will be replaced this summer with “Funbrellas.”

Besides the name, there’s no difference between “Funbrellas” and regular umbrellas, according to Jan Hincapie, executive director of the Lincolnwood Parks and Recreation Department.

It just happens to be the name used by The Kenneth Company, the Lemont-based business that is providing the 20 “Funbrellas” to the village at a cost of $28,084.

The last time the umbrellas at the pool were replaced was 2004, according to information from the village.

Next board meeting scheduled

The next Village Board meeting will be held Tuesday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Lincolnwood Village Hall, 6900 N. Lincoln Ave. Committee of the Whole begins at 6:30 p.m.
