May 9: Jim Cornelison will sing the national anthem for the opening of Crown Point Fire Rescue’s inaugural Public Safety Charity Softball Tournament. Northwest Indiana firefighters, police officers and emergency medical services professionals will battle it out at the Crown Point Sportsplex at Legacy Fields, 1313 East North St. Turn south at the light onto Bulldog Boulevard and head to the water tower.

This event will raise money for Hoosier Burn Camp programs, which help severe burn survivors in Indiana between the ages of 8 to 18.

Admission is $5; kids 10 and younger are admitted free. Sparky the Fire Dog will make appearances throughout the day to say hello to the children.

The teams will be made up of city and town and county departments battling out for bragging rights and helping the burn survivors to survive. Smaller communities may even have combined fire department, police department and EMS teams representing their area.

May 9: Fish Fry from 3 to 7 p.m. at Cedar Lake United Methodist Church, 7124 West 137th Place. Adults $10, children $5. Perch and chicken tenders

May 14: First Car Cruise of the summer is around the square from 4 to 8 p.m. All classic car owners, muscle cars and hot rods are welcome. Music fills the air from the courthouse lawn. Food and craft vendors will line the street and the shops around the square remain open.

Looking ahead

State Parks launches elementary school history program in celebration of the Indiana State Parks centennial celebration and the State of Indiana Bicentennial Celebration that will be celebrated in 2016. There will be 11 curriculum units online targeting fourth-graders and their study of Indiana history. Topics include: fossils, glaciers, American Indian culture, pioneers and the clearing of Indiana’s forests, historic African-American settlements, the Civilian Conservation Corps and much more. Deadline is June 1 for submitting grant applications for consideration by the Crown Point Community Foundation Inc. Summerfest schedule set

Cedar Lake Summerfest 2015 entertainment lineup has been announced. All concerts are free but parking is $5. Come early and stay late along the lakefront by town hall in Cedar Lake.

July 2

6-8 p.m. Mike Sugg, a Toby Keith tribute artist impersonator

8:30–11:30 p.m. Bob Seger tribute band Night Moves

9:30 p.m. Fireworks on the lake (this is the small show)

July 3

6-8 p.m. Mr. Funnyman variety band from Crown Point

8:30–11:30 p.m. Echoes of Pompeii, a Pink Floyd tribute

9:30 p.m. Fireworks extravaganza on the lake, promoted as the largest fireworks show in Summerfest history

July 4

12:30–2:30 p.m. Jim Blanda impressions of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra

3-4:30 p.m. The Cousin Dave Jam Band classic rock

6-8 p.m. Simply Elton recreation of an Elton John concert

8:30-11:30 p.m. Deacon Blues, Steely Dan tribute music

July 5

4-6 p.m. The Movin on Band, from South Side of Chicago, Motown, R&B, disco, pop, rock and latin rock

Dunes summer camp

An even dozen

A statue in memory of Jo Schweitzer is sponsored by the entire family — the Schweitzer, Fitzgerald and Lane families. And joining the previously announced 11 sponsors is Family Express. The statues are scheduled to arrive in Crown Point on July 1 and depart on Oct. 2.
