The West Aurora School Board looked within the district to name a new director of assessment for the next school year.

Elizabeth Wendel, who has served as assistant principal for operations at West Aurora High School for the past three years, was recently appointed to the position. She previously was a math teacher at West Aurora High School.

Wendel obtained a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and educational leadership from Northern Illinois University. Wendel has a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secondary education from the University of Northern Iowa.

“I am excited about my new role,” Wendel said.

The School Board recently approved three other administrative appointments for next year, as well.

Brett Burton will serve as principal of Washington Middle School, Joe Neukirch was named assistant principal of operations of Jefferson Middle School and Christopher Schmid was appointed dean of West Aurora High School.

Burton currently is principal of student services at West Aurora High School. He previously was a teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal within West Aurora District 129. He also was an assistant principal and athletic director in Oswego School District 308.

Burton obtained his doctorate degree with a superintendent endorsement from Northern Illinois University. He earned his master’s degree in educational administration from Northern Illinois University. Burton has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Aurora University.

Neukirch currently serves as dean at West Aurora High School. He previously was a social studies teacher and head coach of swimming and diving at West Aurora High School.

Neukirch obtained his master’s degree in educational leadership from North Central College. Nuekirck has a bachelor’s degree in secondary history education from Southern Illinois University. Neukirch is a product of the West Aurora school system and graduated from West Aurora High School.

Schmid currently is an English and speech teacher, as well as a professional learning community leader, at Waubonsie Valley High School. He has also coached soccer and baseball.

Schmid obtained his master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of St. Francis. Schmid has a bachelor’s degree in communications and education from Illinois State University.
