Regatta: Annual Cardboard Cup Regatta will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Blvd. Registration and on-site building starts at 8 a.m. and the race begins at noon. There will be games, food vendors, a DJ and fun for the whole family. Kits are available for $30 at the village hall located at 66 Thillen. Life preservers aren’t provided but are mandatory. Fundraiser: Save-A-Pet will hold a garage sale in its north parking lot from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at 31664 N. Fairfield Road. Eclectic and interesting home and pet items will be offered including furniture, clothing, tools, books, sports, items, toys, pet items (including Halloween costumes), and much more. Presentation: Dick Cavenaugh, author, major league umpire, pilot, actor and racing enthusiast, will share stories from his memoir, “Just About — But Not Quite,” at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum, 164 Hawley St. Cavenaugh served as the reserve umpire crew chief for the National League from 1974 to 1994. During that span, he was the home plate umpire for the 1979 Cubs-Phillies game, which ended 23-22, as well as game one of the Cubs-Padres National League Playoff in 1984. He has also served as a pilot for the stars, acted in baseball movies including “The Babe” and “A League of their Own,” and worked crash and rescue for Indy Cars, NASCAR, IMSA and more. Fest: Windy City Dub Fest will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at Lake County Fairgrounds, 1060 E. Peterson Road. Spectator tickets and show registration are available. Concert: Lake County Folk Club will present Pat Gaughan, LJ Slavin and Nancy Maio in concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at Fatman Bowl, 13860 Rockland Road. Hear traditional Irish, folk and original music. Gaughan’s intricate guitar playing and rich voice are complemented by Slavin’s traditional instrumental mastery and Maio’s classically trained fiddle. Fundraiser: The Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center will host its Color the Park 5K run/walk Aug. 15 at Hunt Club Park, 900 Hunt Club Road. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the run/walk commencing at 9 a.m. Registration cost is $20 per person, $15 per person for groups of six or more. There will be lots of fun for children and families. Gurnee Fire Department will have a fire truck on hand, as well as squads from Lake Forest, Highland Park, Round Lake Beach (a Camaro), Libertyville, Grayslake (a Tahoe) and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. Proceeds from the race will benefit The Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center, a division of the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office which investigates and provides services to child victims of abuse. Performance: “October Sky” will be performed Aug. 19 through Oct. 18 at Marriott Theatre, 10 Marriott Drive. It was 1957, and Sputnik lights up the October sky over the small Appalachian mining town of Coalwood, W.Va. Homer Hickam, the teenage son of a coal miner, is determined not to end up like generations before him. Inspired by the world’s race to space, Homer and his buddies begin to light up the starry skies with their homemade rockets and dreams of glory. This rich and emotional story is for anyone who ever dreamed of something better and reached for the stars. Fundraiser: Cheeseburger in Purple Paradise Fundraiser will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Waukegan Yacht Club, 199 N. Harbor Place. The event will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Research and Awareness Initiative. There will be cheeseburgers on the grill, an auction and musical entertainment by Johnny Russler and the Beach Bum Band, which has played with Jimmy Buffet. The bandleader lost his father to pancreatic cancer. Also, there will be a remembrance wall for attendees to put up a photo of a loved one who has died from pancreatic cancer. Admission is $50. The mission of the PCRAI is to raise awareness among the younger age groups using innovative approaches. Pancreatic cancer has a five-year, 6 percent survival rate.
