Prairie walk is set for Sunday
Garfield Farm Museum in Campton Hills will offer a prairie walk at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The tour will be led by Jerome Johnson, the museum’s biologist.
Reservations are encouraged and can be made by contacting the museum at 630-584-8485 or info@garfieldfarm.org. The cost for the walk is $6.
Garfield Farm Museum’s land preservation agency, the non-profit Campton Historic Agricultural Lands, has preserved over 375 acres of land, including over 55 acres of managed natural areas. The museum is located five miles west of Geneva, off Route 38 on Garfield Road.
Geneva School District to offer free screening
Geneva School District will offer a free screening for qualifying children 3 to 5 years old with disabilities.
State law indicates that all children with qualifying disabilities between 3 and 5 years old must be provided with programs appropriate to their needs, district officials said. The school district must offer an annual screening of these children in order to determine need and eligibility for services. Eligible children must live in the district.
Geneva School District’s screening will assess a child’s development in the following areas: vision and hearing; speech and language; cognitive and motor; and social and emotional. The screening is optional. It is not a requirement for enrolling in preschool and is not designed to determine kindergarten readiness, district officials said.
The screening will take place Oct. 9 at Friendship Station, 1415 Viking Drive, Geneva.
Appointments are necessary and students must register in order to participate. Proof of residency is required in order to register a child for a screening. For registration, call Friendship Station at 630-444-8500 by Oct. 2.
Boy Scout Troop 11 plans barbecue fundraiser
Famous Dave’s restaurant is partnering with Wesley Boy Scout Troop 11 for its 25th annual fundraiser Sept. 24.
The event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church at 14 N. May St. in Aurora. Guests will have their choice of Famous Dave’s Georgia chopped pork, country roasted chicken, or a combo, accompanied by two sides and cornbread. The donation is $12 in advance, or $13 at the door. Proceeds will go back to the Boy Scout troop to help support funding for tents and other miscellaneous supplies.
4-H open house scheduled in Yorkville
Kendall County 4-H will host an open house to kick-off the new 4-H year from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 3 in Yorkville.
The event is designed to provide an opportunity for interested families and community members to learn about 4-H, meet club members and volunteer leaders, check out 4-H curriculum and projects, and take part in hands-on activities, organizers said.
“This annual 4-H open house welcomes interested families to come check out what Kendall County 4-H is all about,” said Kendall County 4-H Program Coordinator Kim Eisnaugle. “It also signifies the start of a new 4-H year and of National 4-H Week, which is Oct. 4 to 10 this year.”
Every county in Illinois has a 4-H program, which is operated through University of Illinois Extension. 4-H club membership is open to youth aged 8 to 18, and the Cloverbud program is designed for ages 5 to 7.

Literacy Center seeking volunteers
Aurora’s Dominican Literacy Center is seeking tutors to help immigrant women learn to read, write and speak English.
No experience is necessary. Training is free, and tutoring is done in English, center officials said.
Tutors meet one-on-one with students in weekly 90-minute sessions at the center, 260 Vermont Ave. in Aurora.
Tutors select a weekly tutoring time which fits their schedules. Tutoring sessions include Monday through Friday mornings, Monday through Thursday afternoons and Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.
Using English-as-a-second language books, tutors and students complete writing and grammar exercises and practice conversational English. In addition to training, tutors receive support from center staff members.
Also, tutors and students may participate in optional twice-weekly conversation classes.

The center offers free tutoring to women age 17 and older who wish to learn to read, write and speak English. Students are individually tested and receive materials targeted to their goals and learning level. The only fee is $25 for materials, center officials said.
