“Slaughterhouse” by Dominic A. Pacyga will be published by University of Chicago in October. Pacyga explores the history of the Union Stock Yards, from its opening on Christmas Day 1865 to its closing in 1971, and looks at the stockyards’ present-day surrounding neighborhoods. Pacyga is a history professor at Columbia College Chicago.

?The paperback edition of “On Immunity: An Inoculation” by Eula Biss will be published later this month. Biss explores the history of vaccinations and ancient theories on immunity. Biss, a Northwestern University professor, lives in Evanston.

?”Doug Buffone: Monster of the Midway: My 50 Years With the Chicago Bears” by Doug Buffone as told to Chet Coppock will be published by Triumph later this month. Buffone, who died in April, reflects on his life and career, which included playing 14 seasons with the Bears from 1966 to 1979. Coppock is a longtime Chicago sportscaster.

?”The University of Chicago: A History” by John W. Boyer will be published by University Of Chicago Press this month. Boyer examines the history of the University of Chicago and how the university has maintained its presence despite undergoing a number of changes. Boyer is the Martin A. Ryerson distinguished service professor in history at the university and dean of the college.

?”Chicago: A Food Biography” by Daniel R. Block and Howard Rosing will be published by Rowman & Littlefield later this month. Block and Rosing explore how Chicago’s cultural cuisine developed and how industrial food manufacturers, such as the stockyards and Kraft Foods, prospered. Block is a professor at Chicago State University. Rosing is the executive director of the Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning and Community Service Studies at DePaul University.

Recently self-published: “A Peace Conundrum” by Alex Jacobs and “Organics: Flora and Fauna in Architectural Ornament” by Gregory H. Jenkins.
