A Batavia woman was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation after she was found by police walking around with a small knife.

Police were dispatched at 10:30 a.m. Friday after a report of a woman in her 70s who may be mentally unstable and carrying a small knife.

Det. Kevin Bretz said the woman is a Batavia resident in her 70s. He said the woman was located carrying a paring knife while walking westbound on Main Street in the area of Batavia High School.

He said a Batavia police officer assigned to the high school heard the dispatch on his police radio and confirmed that no students were outside of the building. Bretz said the officer went to the area and found the woman.

“At no time were any students or staff in danger,” Bretz said.

Bretz said the incident had no connection to the high school nor were any students or staff involved.

He said the woman was not arrested.

“We determined since there were no injuries and she seemed rather unstable that some type of evaluation was the best action to take,” Bretz said.
