Items from old Main Aurora Library for sale

The public is invited to purchase items from the former Main Aurora Library at 1 E. Benton St. from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Desks, office chairs, computer tables, filing cabinets, cubicles and shelving will be available for purchase by cash or check only. Items must be moved by the buyer on the day of the sale.

Prices start below $20 for items such as floor mats, electric typewriters and framed pictures, to more than $100 for tables with chairs and a myriad of shelving units.

Batavia school superintendent to review book

Batavia School District Superintendent Lisa Hichens will review “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success,” by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, at noon Oct. 15 at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.

Hichens’ presentation is part of the library’s monthly Books Between Bites series.

According to Dweck, students are preparing for a future where current jobs may not exist.

“It comes more important than ever to teach students skills that will always be relevant,” she said. “Among those skills is perseverance. Is there something that educators and parents can do differently to help students rise to the challenges they face and seek solutions to the most difficult problems?”

Cooking classes planned in Aurora

Prisco’s Fine Foods, 1108 Prairie St. in Aurora, will reprise two of its most popular cooking classes for its 18th annual fall series.

Scheduled are “Meals in Minutes” at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 14, and “Cocktail Party” at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 13.

The public is invited. The fee is $45 for each class.

Phyllis Kramer of Aurora, Prisco’s long-time culinary instructor and a Butterball Turkey Helpline adviser, will return to teach the 18th annual series.

Classes, about two hours each, and the tasting will meet in the store’s cafe area.

In “Meals in Minutes,” Kramer will share tips on how to get a meal on the table in 30 minutes of less. Using the meals in minutes concept, Kramer will prepare beef, chicken, pork and seafood meals.

Andy Guzauskas, store general manager, will pour his favorite wines and beers to complement what Kramer prepares and samples.

During “Cocktail Party,” Kramer will explore easy ways to prepare food in advance, how to comfortably entertain guests with special dietary needs and how to balance a menu using chicken, seafood, beef, pork, cheese and vegetables.

Additionally, Kramer will give tips on how to garnish party platters and how to create a holiday centerpiece.

Rosary to host Fun Run

The Rosary High School Cross Country team is hosting a one-mile Fun Run for all students in eighth grade and younger Oct. 13 at the school, 901 N. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora.

Registration begins at 3:45 p.m. with a course tour at 4:15 p.m. The first race starts at 4:30 p.m. with the youngest division. Separate one-mile races will follow every 15 minutes, and awards will be presented after each race. Trophies will be awarded to first-place finishers and place ribbons for second through fifth place in each division. All finishers will receive a ribbon.

Parents or coaches must accompany runners. Teams are welcome. Participants must fill out a participation form and include a $1 donation per runner. Sign up is at www.rosaryhs.com/sports_news. Home and Community Education group plans open house

The Kane County Association of Home and Community Education will host an open house Oct. 14 at the University of Illinois Extension office in St. Charles.

Kane County Association of Home and Community Education works to enhance the lives of individuals and families through educational programs and experiences encouraging responsible leadership and service to the community.

The Oct. 14 event will feature activities, demonstrations, historical books, refreshments and a special tai chi program at 1 p.m. Visitors can meet members and learn more about the organization.

The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University of Illinois Extension office at 535 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

Auditions set for ‘Mary Poppins’

Auditions for the Winter Stage production of the musical “Mary Poppins” will be held Oct. 26 at the Prisco Community Center at 150 W. Illinois Ave. in Aurora.

“We’re inviting performers of all ages – from 6 to 70 – but we especially have a lot of fun roles for young children,” said performing arts manager Kyle Donahue.

Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. Candidates are asked to prepare an audition song from the selections provided at Prisco or online at foxvalleyparkdistrict.org. A free informational meeting for those interested in learning more about performance details and opportunities will be held at Prisco at 6 p.m. Oct. 14.

Rehearsals begin Nov. 3, with four performances scheduled Jan. 8 to 10 at the Prisco Community Center. For more information, call 630-859-8606.

Open house at fire station in Montgomery

Montgomery and Countryside Fire Department, 198 S. Railroad St. in Montgomery, will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The public is invited. Admission, parking and refreshments are free.

Activities for kids will include touching trucks, trying on safety gear, coloring, movies, a safety course and more.

Adult activities will include fire station tours, fire safety information and child seat inspections.

Lions Club Candy Day fundraiser Friday

Aurora Noon Lions Club members will hold the club’s annual Candy Day fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Cosmopolitan Marketplace, 2372 W. New Indian Trail Road in Aurora.

Lions will give away mini Tootsie Pops and accept monetary donations to help the visually and hearing impaired.
