Gary man charged with attack on cab driver
Charges of robbery resulting in bodily injury, armed robbery, kidnapping, battery and theft of a firearm have been filed against a Gary man.
Kevin Demetrius Moore, 24, of the 500 block of Porter Street, was charged in the Sept. 18 robbery of a cab driver.
The victim, who said he is employed by the 219 cab service, was called by Moore, someone he’s known for several months. Moore pointed a gun at the driver and threatened to kill him before robbing him and striking him in the face with the weapon, the probable cause affidavit states. The man told police that Moore took $22, his cellphone and his handgun.
The most serious of the charges is a Level 3 felony, which is punishable by three to 16 years.
Inmate from Hammond charged with escape
A Hammond man has been charged with escape after he bolted from custody while he and other inmates were being transported from the Gary police lockup to the Lake County Jail.
N’Vaun Terrell Lewis, 20, of the 4700 block of Towle Avenue, ran from an officer on Oct. 1 as she was loading the inmates to be driven to Crown Point, court records state. Lewis was found six minutes later on 6th Avenue and Buchanan Street in Gary by an officer and his K-9 partner.
Lewis had been charged with felon in possession of a handgun after police arrested him as part of an investigation into armed robberies that had occurred after sellers placed ads on Craigslist. Lewis was sentenced last year to four years for robbery and one year for possession of stolen property. One year of his sentence was suspended and ordered served on probation.
Gary man who fled from program charged
A Gary man allowed to transfer from Lake County Jail to Lake County Community Corrections while his probation revocation is pending has been charged with failure to return to lawful detention.
Terrence Deshon Christmas, 39, was given a day pass from the program last month after he’d been allowed to transition there on Aug. 20. The pass was given to Christmas about 1 p.m. Sept. 3 so he could go to CVS Pharmacy, but Christmas never returned, court records state.
Christmas was sentenced in March 2013 to three years in prison, with 29 months suspended and served on probation for theft. A petition to revoke probation was filed about five months later, and in February 2014, Lake County authorities learned Christmas was in custody in Manchester, Tenn. He was returned to Lake County in mid-July.
The charge is a Level 6 felony, punishable by a maximum 30-month sentence.
