I was reading the Daily Southtown, and I saw that someone in Speak Out was asking why there isn’t more information about good guys with guns saving people. That’s because the news media ignores the statistics. Most of the gun magazines have listings of the different incidents in which good guys with guns have saved lives, prevented robberies or supported police. Just because the general media ignores it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. There have been many instances of people with firearms legally preventing incidents or saving people’s lives, including their own

I have a message for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. If you want to charge us for our garbage pickup and increase the property tax we pay and want to treat us like the suburbs, then treat us like the suburbs and let’s get rid of all these aldermen. No suburb has anywhere near 50 aldermen. So as a taxpayer, I’m saying this, and I’m fed up with all of you. You think it’s easy for senior citizens to live in Chicago?
The Chicago Bears are dead. The cause of their death is self-inflicted wounds. Now they are stuck with Jay Cutler, a prima donna overpaid quarterback who’s injury prone, and Jimmy Clausen, a second-string quarterback who can’t play football. Clausen is unacceptable at quarterback. He should be traded to Canada as soon as possible. I’m sure we could trade him for six northern pike. Our pass defenders are like Swiss cheese, and the only people I feel sorry for are our loyal Chicago Bears fans

Members of the extreme right are downright giddy over John Boehner’s resignation as U.S. House speaker, despite the fact that he’s one of the most conservative speakers in history. I guess they won’t be satisfied unless we turn this country into a theocracy. But the good news is secularism and progressivism are winning at an astonishing rate, as they always have and always will.

A lot of people are complaining about the governor’s cutbacks, etc. If these people really care about our state’s future, have them explain how they save their money by spending more. I agree that politicians were the cause of our current situation, and unfortunately we, the people, are the ones who are affected most by what Gov. Rauner is trying to do.

By law, Gov. Bruce Rauner is supposed to present a balanced budget. He’s been in office many months now and has yet to present a balanced budget. That’s his job. He should be censured.
It bothers me that the people doing the most talking about police are the ones who know how to do the job the least. They don’t know what it’s like to be a police officer, but they always have so much to say. I just saw on the news about people who are putting on a play about someone who was shot by an off-duty sheriff, and they said they can’t understand why police don’t just shoot to disarm. It’s called justifiable use of deadly force. If you don’t know what it’s like to be a police officer, please don’t comment on the job.

Kudos to you, Joe, in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood community on your comment in Speak Out in the Sept. 20 edition. I agree with you wholeheartedly that immigrants who are here illegally should be made to pay for their housing, education, health care and classes to learn English before Chicago and Illinois gouge taxpayers any further. We owe our U.S. citizens, seniors, veterans and pensioners first and foremost. Our elected officials should make sure this happens.

Gerrymandering legislative and congressional districts to favor a particular political party cheats voters out of their vote. There’s no two ways about it. Illinois is gerrymandered to be Democratic. Gov. Bruce Rauner wants to stop that. He wants to redistrict it fairly, which is a great idea. Gerrymandering should be stopped nationwide. The way it is now, our votes don’t really count because things are stacked against us. Political parties decide which votes are going where. If you vote against their wishes, you might as well stay home.
