That Chicago has an enormous problem with violence is an indisputable fact. Although much has been said and done about it, still even more needs to be said and done. This Thursday, Oct. 15, Bronzeville-native, gospel-influenced R&B/hip-hop artist Sir the Baptist will make a public contribution to the conversation, leading a demonstration titled “Wake Up Chicago” in which, for every person who has been killed in Chicago this year, street artists will spray a chalk outline and name. The singer, who will join community leaders to speak on the issue, also will perform–a full gospel choir supporting him. The event takes place 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Michigan Ave. and the Chicago River–right outside the RedEye offices in Tribune Tower, as it turns out.

It’s a dramatic way to increase awareness, and at this point, it’s hard to imagine anyone saying advanced discussion and focus are less than vital.

Sir the Baptist also will be performing Sunday, Oct. 18, at Double Door. Watch the video for his single “Raise Hell” below.
