Oct. 23-24: Haunted Halls of Hanover, 10120 W. 133rd Ave., Cedar Lake, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. with the last ticket sold at 9 p.m. Features 14 rooms of horror, and laser tag has been added this year. Cost is $10 but laser tag only is $7. There is a mild area for children, with games and coloring pages. Brought to you by the Hanover Central Athletic Boosters. Go screech for me.
Oct. 24: Sheriff John Buncich is offering help to seniors. Don’t get your identity stolen. He is offering an industrial-size shredder on the south side of the parking lot at the Lake County Government Center on Main Street in Crown Point. Make sure those documents, canceled checks and things with your information on it cannot be pulled out of your garbage and used to defraud you. Volunteers will be there to help unload your vehicle and there will be a drop-off option available if you can’t wait. Also tables sponored by AARP and lots of other organizations will provide information on services available to seniors.
Oct. 24: 20th Annual Make A Difference Day. Photo session by master photographer Edda Taylor at her studio in the old Court House. Children dressed in Halloween costumes or fall attire will be photographed in a seasonal setting. Appointments are necessary: 219 662-9500. Cost is $25 and includes two 5-by-7 photos and eight wallet-size photo. All proceeds are donated to St. Jude House. Burrell Colour Imaging is also sponsoring this event.
Oct. 31: Halloween. Turn your porch light on if you have goodies for the kiddies. Also, daylight saving time ends on Halloween. Set your clock back one hour or you will be early to church on All Saints Day. If you are, stay and say an extra prayer for me. I need it.
Nov. 3: Election Day. You can vote right now with early voting. Voting is not just a privilege it is a responsibility to every soldier who ever went into battle in the uniform of the United States. This is our country and we are all responsible for the way it is run. I know many who say, what difference does it make if I vote or not? President John F. Kennedy was elected by a margin that equals one vote in every precinct in the country. You do matter. In Crown Point, a highly qualified city councilman lost an election by three votes because his neighbors were sure he would win and didn’t bother to vote. Think about it. Just three votes.
