Scientists at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, have created a camera that can locate and track objects around corners.
Key Facts
The camera that can “see” around corners is sensitive enough to capture single photons.
A camera that can track objects from around corners could potentially be used in rescue missions with dangerous terrain or in cars to detect oncoming vehicles.
The camera shoots laser pulses at the floor near a corner, then analyzes how the light spreads and bounces off of an object concealed around that corner. It launches these pulses 67 million times per second and records the average of the results after three seconds. The camera can show an object’s position and follow its movement, but only gives a rough outline of its shape. In the future, researchers hope that this technology will prove useful for drivers, emergency responders and people who must venture into dangerous locations.
