Over the past 17 years, Dennis Argyrakis hasn’t regretted his decision to become a firefighter — or the place where he chose to be one.

“Once I got hired here, I wanted to stay,” he said.

Over those years, he rose to become lieutenant in the Elmwood Park Fire Department, and at the first Elmwood Park Village Board meeting of the new year, he took another step.

At the Jan. 4 meeting, he was sworn in as a captain.

Kevin Miller, chief of Elmwood Park Fire Department, said Argyrakis is a great person.

“I’m happy for him,” he said. “He’s a very qualified individual.”

The meeting was filled with Argyrakis supporters, including family and friends who watched with pride as he took his oath.

His wife, Michelle, was one of those spectators.

“I’m so proud of him,” she said. “He worked really hard to get this.”

Argyrakis, 42, said he’s just doing what he loves.

“I love this job and I want to keep going with the village,” he said. “I like this community, the fire department. It’s a progressive department and I like the training.”
