Multi-instrumental performance: Enjoy a variety of music styles as you move your body and sing along at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. After the performance, children will have a chance to try out the instruments themselves. This is a free family event. Seating is limited and tickets are required
Teen Writers Group: Aspiring teen authors or poets are encouraged to come and share work with peers at 4:30 p.m. Monday. Activities will be available to develop your writing, editing, and critiquing skills. Registration requested.
BLOG basics: Learn what a blog is, common types of blogs and why people all over are blogging at 7 p.m. Monday. Registration requested.
Writers Group: Connect with other writers at this is a drop-in program at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Discover Michigan: Take a trip with Ralph Danielsen and travel to “Michigan’s Incredible Coast” at 2 p.m. Sunday. A fall journey highlights miles of beaches, towering dunes, radiant sunsets and more watercraft and lighthouses than any other state. Registration required.
Movie: While the kids are out of school, bring them in for a movie matinee of “The Great Mouse Detective” Monday. It will be shown in Spanish at 11 a.m. and English at 2 p.m., on the big screen and animal crackers will be served or bring you own snacks and beverages.
Online FAFSA: Get hands-on help completing the FAFSA online from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Stop by the Youth Services Desk to pick up a checklist of what to bring. This program is presented by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Registration required.
Radio Players: Relive the golden age of radio with two Sherlock Holmes mysteries based on original scripts, complete with sound effects and original music. at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Registration required.

Preschool fair: Learn about local preschools in Buffalo Grove, Lincolnshire, Long Grove, and nearby communities to find the best match for your child Sunday. Arrive anytime between 1 and 3 p.m. to gather information and communicate directly with preschool directors and teachers. Refreshments and a coloring activity for kids will be provided.
MLK Day of Service project: Learn about nonprofit Chicago HOPES for Kids, which sends tutors into homeless shelters to help children with their homework at 11 a.m. Monday. Then make snowflake scarves for the children in the shelters. For grades 2 and up with an adult. Registration required.
Performance: The Shakespeare Project of Chicago presents “The Winter’s Tale” at 6:30 p.m. Monday. This live theatrical reading places an artistic emphasis on the language of the plays and leverages the talents of professional actors (members of Actors’ Equity Association). Arrive early for a pre-show introduction at 6:15 p.m., and stay after as cast members discuss the play and answer questions. Registration required.
Blogging with WordPress: Create a free blog with WordPress, learn the basics and get started blogging at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. Internet experience and email account required. Registration required.

Book group: Discuss “The Same Sky” by Amanda Eyre Ward at 7 p.m. Tuesday. A childless woman looking to adopt crosses paths with a 13-year-old Honduran girl who has embarked on a dangerous journey. Book club copies are available for extended checkout. Registration recommended.

Day of Service, movie and story time: Participate in the National Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. Children of all ages (and any artistically-inclined adults) will be a part of the “Color A Smile” service project, a drop-in coloring event. Also, the movie “Hairspray” will be shown at 1:30 p.m., and there will be a special story time and activity for preschoolers from 3:30 to 4 p.m.
