My mother died a few days ago. She was 97, a member of the WWII generation that is very quickly disappearing. Her husband served in WWII and the Korean War. They both sacrificed a lot when my father fought for this country. But looking around today at where we are as a nation, I am stricken with such deep feelings of bewilderment and shame. We seem to be mired in bad behavior everywhere I look: in our politicians, in our neighborhoods, on the highways, on TV. I am bewildered by its prevalence, and ashamed by these actions. I want my parents’ lives and duty to their country to have been worth something.
