Chicago Heights police are investigating the slaying of a 20-year-old man Saturday night in the south suburb, authorities said.

Karriem C. Humphrey was pronounced dead at St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights, at 7:33 p.m. Saturday following a shooting near 12th and Halsted Streets in the south suburb, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and Chicago Heights police. Humphrey died from a gunshot wound to the torso, the medical examiner’s office determined following an autopsy Sunday.

Police were called to 12th and Halsted about after someone reported shots fired in the area about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a release from Chicago Heights. Police were then called to the hospital because Humphrey, who the medical examiner’s office said lived in the 1900 block of Dartmouth Drive, had shown up there with gunshot wounds.

Illinois State Police crime scene investigators processed the scene for local police, who are working with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force to investigate the homicide.

Anyone with information on the killing is asked to call detectives at 708-756-6422.
