Practice Spanish language at event in Valpo
The Spanish Table, a Spanish conversation group for those who want to improve their language skills, will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Valparaiso International Center, 309 E. Chess tourney set for Morton High
Morton High School will host the 47th annual Scholastic Chess of Indiana State Team Chess Championships from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 19. Students in grades K through 12 from across the state will compete to be called the top school teams. This tournament is the largest USCF rated chess tournament held yearly in Indiana. Free day Saturday at Dillinger Museum
The John Dillinger Museum in Crown Point will open its doors free of charge from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday as part of Smithsonian Institution’s Museum Day Live! special edition. Tickets for Museum Day Live! are available for download at www.smithsonian.com/museumday and will also be accepted from smart phones. Visitors who present the ticket will gain free entrance for two at the John Dillinger Museum. One ticket, per household, per email address is permitted. Oboe recital in Michigan City
The Michigan City Chamber Music Festival presents Jennet Ingle, oboe, in recital at 3 p.m. March 20 at First Presbyterian Church, 121 W. 9th St., Michigan City. National Lakeshore offers talk on amphibians
Join scientist Bob Brodman at 1 p.m. March 26 for a program on amphibians based upon his research work at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The program is presented at the Paul H. Douglas Center as part of its weekly Saturday Open House Series. Topics will include restoration of fragmented habitats, using amphibian-friendly plants or crops and identifying environmentally friendly herbicides.

Indiana Dunes Science Conference set at Ivy Tech
On April 6, the public is invited to attend the 2016 Indiana Dunes Science Conference in the auditorium of Ivy Tech Community College – Valparaiso Campus. The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is open to the public and is free of charge. Over 20 scientists will highlight previous and ongoing research conducted within Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and explore how this research can help inform park management decisions. The conference is part of a year-long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service and the 50th Anniversary of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
On April 7, conference participants may choose to attend a field trip to learn from experts about the ecology of particular habitats and restoration projects in Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Destinations will include Cowles Bog, the Great Marsh, and the oak savanna in Miller Woods. Field trips will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end by 1:00 p.m.
