Hot dogs, beer and a video board larger than The Bean: just a few makings of the modern version of America’s pastime.
As high definition becomes the norm for indoor and outdoor stadiums, MLB teams have updated video boards, often to sizes that outpace those of other teams. Whereas nine years ago the average new video board was 2,678 square feet, this year that number is more than 8,000 square feet.
The White Sox plan to unveil an array of new digital boards this spring — including a massive primary board in center field complete with digital pinwheels. The new video board vaults the Sox from second to last in terms of size (the old boad was 1,484 square feet and was installed in 2003), to No. 7, with a size of around 8,000 square feet. For comparison the left field board installed by the Cubs last year is nearly 4,000 square feet.
The new board at U.S. Cellular Field — manufactured by Diamond Vision — is part of a trend across all sports of larger, high-definition screens, prompted first by the adaption to HD (which works best with larger boards).
“It’s more updated with the experience people have in their homes,” Todd Stih, Diamond Vision’s national sales manager, said of the larger boards. “Because the reality is that these teams, when they put on a production, they’re competing with a production you can get at home watching TV.”
Teams are competing for the attention of fans accustomed to seeing advanced analytics and stats during the game. With larger boards, teams can provide this information all the while generating additional revenue through more advertising on a larger screen.
