A Winthrop Harbor man stopped for throwing a cigarette butt out the window of a vehicle was ticketed for more than just littering.
Winthrop Harbor police stopped 38-year-old Clayton Rice Saturday when an officer allegedly saw him throw a cigarette butt out the window a vehicle with a loud muffler near 14th Street and Park Avenue, police said.
Officers learned Rice was driving with a revoked license, and officers discovered marijuana during a subsequent search of the vehicle, police said.
Rice was charged with littering, driving a vehicle with a loud muffler, unlawful possession of cannabis and driving with a revoked license, Winthrop Harbor Detective Sgt. Christopher Willets. According to the village website, fines for littering range from $25 for the first offense to $50 and $100 for future offenses.
“I would guess we only have a couple of littering tickets a year,” Willets said.
