Police are searching for a suspect who broke into nine vehicles Wednesday parked at the South Shore station parking lot in East Chicago.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transit Police Chief Bob Byrd said in a statement that windows were smashed and items stolen from the cars just before 7 a.m. The station is located at 5615 Indianapolis Boulevard.

The suspect cut himself on glass while breaking into the cars and swabs of blood have been obtained for DNA comparisons. The offender is a black male, in his early to mid-20s. He wore dark clothing and drove a gray 2006 Buick Lacrosse.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NICTD police at 219-398-6000. Byrd said information is kept confidential.
