A Marquette Park man has been charged with home invasion after police said he broke into a Southwest Side home and caused the homeowner to accidentally shoot himself in the hand, according to a news release.
Martin Hayes, 40, was identified as the man who broke the window of a residence in the 3600 block of West 57th Place on Thursday to enter the house of a 69-year-old man.
The man heard someone inside his house and retrieved his gun, police said at the time. He confronted Hayes and as the two struggled over the weapon, the man accidentally shot himself in the hand.
He went to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. He has a valid permit for the gun, police said.
Hayes, of the 6400 block of South Spaulding Avenue, was on parole for a 2013 burglary conviction at the time of the home invasion. He is expected to appear in court Monday.
