Explore the world of Fabyan family
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s “Sense of Place” program series explores the world of George and Nelle Fabyan from 10 a.m. to noon June 4 at Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Geneva.
The program will weave the story of George and Nelle Fabyan, the estate, the architecture, and the Fabyans’ love of the exotic. The tour will include a walk through the villa, as well as a stroll in the Japanese Garden, event organizers said.
Advance registration is required. Programs, offered through a partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, St. Charles Park District and Geneva Park District, are for ages 18 and above. The registration fee is $10. To register, call 630-444-3190 or e-mail programs@kaneforest.com.
United Way to hold Recognition Breakfast
Fox Valley United Way will host its annual Recognition Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. May 19 at Piper’s Banquets in Aurora.
The event brings together donors, volunteers and advocates with the social service agencies and clients that have benefited from their time, attention and generosity in the past year.
Several awards will be presented at the breakfast, including Community Action and Campaign Contributor awards that honor corporate and employee contributions, the Volunteer of the Year award that celebrates someone who has gone above and beyond to serve the community and the Live United award that recognizes those who embody what it means to help those in the community, event organizers said.
There will also be a special tribute to Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner for his support of United Way. Weisner has announced he won’t run for re-election in 2017.
Batavia retirement home to host senior health fair
A free senior health and fitness fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 25 at The Holmstad retirement community, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia.
The public is invited. Admission and parking are free.
The fourth annual event will feature health screenings, cooking demonstrations and more than 40 health-related vendors, event organizers said.
Raffle prizes, giveaways and fresh produce from a local farmers market will also be part of the event.
At 1 p.m., keynote speaker Dr. Phil Branshaw will discuss Delnor Northwestern Hospital’s congestive heart failure program and transitional care from a hospital to home or a skilled nursing facility. Branshaw is an internal medicine physician at Delnor in Geneva.
Those attending the event are invited to bring soap bars and personal hygiene items for donation to Wayside Cross Ministries in Aurora.

Plano city employees honored
Mayor Bob Hausler of Plano presented service awards to city employees at the May 9 City Council meeting.
Employees recognized for service included David Limon Jr., Streets Department, 10 years of service; Delvin Noss, Water Department, 10 years; Thomas Romano, property maintenance inspector, 10 years; Debra Solecki, police records clerk, 10 years; Norman Allison, police sergeant, 15 years; Aaron Smith, police sergeant, 20 years and Steven Eaves, outgoing police chief, 30 years.
