Saltwater Showdown: This year, the 18th annual Mercury/SeaVee Pompano Beach Saltwater Showdown is an open event that any boat can fish. In previous years, boats had to qualify to fish the circuit’s third and final event. The Showdown is Aug. 6 with the weigh-in at the Sands Harbor Resort & Marina. The entry fee is $475 per boat. The Blue Moon Kickoff Party is 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Pompano Beach Civic Center and includes live music, a silent auction and raffles, free fishing clinics for kids and the opportunity to buy tickets for a drawing for a 29 SeaVee. Snakehead tournament: JD’s Custom Baits has its next Snakehead Round-Up from safe light to 2 p.m. Aug. 6 out of Veterans Memorial Park, 7044 NW First St., Margate. Entry fee is $40 cash per person or two-angler team and $10 for the big fish pot. Anglers must bring in five snakeheads for their biggest one to count. Boating safety: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 34 has an eight-hour safe boating class Aug. 13 at Imperial Point Hospital, 6401 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. The course encompasses seamanship, equipment and legal requirements, emergencies and navigation rules. Cost is $50 and there are discounts for multiple family members.
