Prisco remembered for his faith

My farewell message to Anthony Prisco is my admiration of him for wearing his faith on his sleeve. Prisco’s grocery store is in my neighborhood and I shop there frequently. What caught my eye on my first trip there was the cross hanging in the front of the store. It is so rare to encounter a businessman who is not afraid to share his faith with his employees and customers.

God bless you Mr. Prisco for all the years that i have been the recipient of blessings your display.

Library makes tough decisions

In response to the Aurora Library Board President John Savage’s guest commentary of 7/22 (“Let’s get facts straight on Aurora library cuts”):

As an avid user of the West Branch (and a taxpayer), I am disappointed that hours at the West Branch will be reduced, but I completely agree with the decision to make those cuts and applaud the board for making tough decisions that needed to be made. I would rather have the ever-growing resources of the library system than argue about reduced hours and thoughtful “belt-tightening” needed to address current shortfalls.

The library’s decision not to cut resources when the recession hit was a gift to the community – one that I don’t believe has been adequately recognized. I lost my job in 2010 and was underemployed for several years. During that time, my family definitely increased our reliance on the library. Thank heavens to the library system for expanding resources when we really needed it.

I appreciate that Savage set the record straight on layoffs. The July 14th column citing “40 layoffs” was indeed unsettling – as well as untrue and unfair. During a recent visit to the West Branch, I asked an employee for his thoughts on the announced cuts. He said his supervisors were making sure that he would be accommodated and that he’d even been offered shifts at other locations. In other words, he was telling me how hard library leadership was working to make the changes as painless as possible.

I agree with Savage’s assessment that the Aurora Library System is amazing. The board deserves credit for working to keep it that way.
