Bears quarterback Jay Cutler did not participate in practice Thursday, leaving his status for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions in significant jeopardy.

Cutler left the Bears’ Week 2 loss with a sprained right thumb and then missed last Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Cutler was listed as limited in Wednesday’s practice. In that session, he did “not a whole lot,” coach John Fox said.

Then he was held out Thursday.

“We just didn’t want to aggravate it more,” Fox said. “The thumb on the throwing hand of a quarterback is a delicate situation. So we just figured we wouldn’t go out there and have any stress on it.”

Brian Hoyer would start Sunday in Cutler’s place. In Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the Cowboys, he was 30-of-49 passing for 317 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also lost a fumble.
