Omegas and Dons Thanksgiving Eve collection

Members of both the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Kappa Chapter, and the Indiana University Dons, Inc. will join forces to collect for those in need from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 23, at two locations in Gary: Save More Food Center, 921 Broadway; and Fresh County Market, 2550 Arthur St. Proceeds will provide clothes, food and toys for children and families during the holiday season. Turkey Trot set in Valparaiso

Registration is underway for the 2016 Turkey Trot, hosted by Porter-Starke Services Foundation, with the 10K set to begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 8:10 a.m. Nov. 24 at Valparaiso High School, 2727 Campbell St.. Registration fee is $35. Online registration also is available. Race-day registration will not be accepted. Thanksgiving dinner event in Gary

The Economic Development Committee of Gary Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will host its 11th annual Thanksgiving Dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at Ivy Tech Community College, 1440 E. 35th Ave., Gary. Toy and model train show scheduled

A train show will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 26 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 889 S. Court St., Crown Point. Registration open for hockey lessons in Valparaiso

Valpo Parks will offer youth hockey lessons for children ages 5 to 13 at the Central Park Plaza ice rink, 55 Napoleon St.. Classes will meet three times a week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings from Nov. 29 to March 5. The fee is $230 per child. Hockey jersey, socks and ice skate rental are included. COPD awareness event planned

St. Mary Medical Center will host a free COPD educational seminar and health fair from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 29 in the auditorium and conference rooms at the hospital, 1500 S. Lake Park Ave., Hobart. Students in the hospitality program at Ivy Tech Community College are cooking meals for the public, students, staff and families Dec. 1 and 8 in the restaurant on campus, 410 E. YMCA to host holiday breakfast

The Valparaiso Family YMCA will partner with the Northwest Indiana Parrothead Club to host a holiday breakfast with Santa from 7:30-9 a.m. Dec. 3 at 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive, Valparaiso. There will be photos with Santa for $2, and each child will receive a gift. In addition, there will be games and crafts. Tickets are $6 per adult, $3 per child. Holiday Extravaganza and vendor fair

Opportunity Enterprises will open its doors to the public for the 2016 Holiday Extravaganza from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 3 at 2801 Evans Ave., Valparaiso. The Simply Amazing Market will host an open house showcasing a wide variety of gourmet treats and holiday-themed confections, along with ceramics and artisan glassware made by Opportunity Enterprises client artists. Guests can browse and place holiday orders. Local vendors also will be on hand selling specialty products from noon to 5 p.m. In addition, Santa will make an appearance, and there will be arts, crafts and games. Breakfast with Santa

The Schererville Parks Department will host Breakfast with Santa from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 3 at the Community Center, 500 E. Joliet St., Schererville. There will be photos with Santa, hot cocoa, and children can make reindeer food to leave out on Christmas Eve. 5K Arctic Dash scheduled in Porter County

Boys and Girls Clubs of Porter County is partnering with NWI Clean Air, Extra Mile Fitness, Aqua Indiana and the City of Portage for the 5K Arctic Dash at 8 a.m. and Little Igloo Youth Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 3 at 5895 Evergreen, Portage. Cost is $20 per runner, with a $1 discount for Gold Cup runners registering before Friday. Registration after Friday and the day of the race is $25.
